Lot 412 – Of Rowing Interest – A Victorian Silver Doggett Arm Badge, of oval shape, decorated the White Horse of Hanover, beneath a banner inscribed “Liberty”, inscribed under the horse ” The Gift of Mr Theo Doggett, The Late Famous Comedian, August 1st 1839″, four rings to the back, maker Charles Reily and George Storer, London 1839, 20cm x 17cm, approx. 8oz.
Note – The race is the oldest rowing race in the world, up to six apprentice watermen of the Thames compete for the honour, which has been held annually, since 1715, and is rowed upstream, from London Bridge to Cadogan Pier, Chelsea. Also included with this lot is a volume of “Doggett’s Coat and Badge, by Robert Cottrell, 2023.
