At our most recent sale, at The Ibbett Mosely Auction Rooms, Silver and Gold continued to exceed all expectations, even though there’s a fear that the market, especially for silver, is overheating, and that if there is a sudden correction in prices, then members of the trade could have trouble covering their futures. However, this did not prevent competitive bidding for lot 273, in this auction. This was a fine quality William IV Silver Candleabrum, and Centrepiece, by Robinson,Edkins, and Aston, and was hallmarked for Birmingham 1833. Weighing in at 102 oz, it had been fitted with some replacement silver plated vases, and a central bowl, possibly in place of some ruby tinted glass pieces. Bidding over the telephone, and the internet, via easyliveauction.com pushed the price up to £5,400, before the hammer went down.

In the March Auction held at the Ibbett Mosely Auction Rooms in Sevenoaks, there was a consignment of Silver by Tiffany and Co, of New York. Catalogued as Tiffany Sterling, rather than silver, because since Brexit we have had to revert back to the 1973 Hallmarking Act, and in the absence of import marks, the term silver could not be used. Interest was created over the pre-sale viewing days, and with online bidders, telephone bidders, and potential buyers, in the room, the consignment sold for a total of £3,340, which comprised a tureen, by Edward C. Moore (£2,300), a bachelor’s sugar bowl and cream jug, sugar caster and nips, etc ( £400), and a pair of salts, a mustard pot, and a pair of sugar casters (£640).

The antique furniture market has been very selective for some years now, but, top quality pieces can still command a healthy price, even when they need a bit of tender loving care. In our most recent sale, at the Ibbett Mosely Auction Rooms, the catalogue included an Early 18th Century Walnut Veneered Card Table. It was of the fold-over top variety, with a concertina action, to support the top when the table is in the open position. Such tables can have a single gateleg, double gateleg, or telescopic action, but, the concertina is the top notch one to have on these pieces. The table in this sale needed quite a lot of restoration, and had already been worked on during the Victorian period, as well. During the viewing days, several suitable buyers had a close look at it, and on the day, itself, there were bidders online, via the Easy Live bidding platform, on the telephone, and bidding in the room. It sold for £6,000 to one of the top London dealers of Fine English Furniture.

Our most recent Auction Sale, held on 17th June, was our first post lockdown event. Using the appropriate social distancing rules, we held the auction using an online bidding platform easyliveauction.com The only human presence was the Auctioneer, Alan White, and his team of socially distancing staff, who were administrating the sale, and carrying out telephone and commission bids.

Alan, a Partner at Ibbett Mosely said ” It was a strange feeling to start with, carrying out an auction without bidders in the room, and I was a little apprehensive to begin with, but that soon disappeared”. Potential buyers were able to view images and descriptions of the various lots on offer through the online bidding platform, and a small number were able to view the sale, on a strictly limited appointment basis, two days before the auction.

With bidders registering from the U.S., China, and Israel, as well as all over the U.K., the prices achieved were very healthy indeed.

The price of gold is at a high, currently, and one of the early lots was a 9ct gold cigarette case, which sold for £1,250, followed by various gold coins, such as sovereigns, realising between £260 and £340.

The market for Longcase, or Grandfather clocks has been a difficult one for some time now, but good examples do still reach good prices. Here at the Ibbett Mosely Auction Rooms, a 19th century longcase, by Brockbanks of London, sold for £1,900, to a buyer from the North of England.

Silver is another area of the antiques market that is seeing healthy prices paid for the right quality items. A pair of George III sauce boats, dated for London 1809, sold for £340. These were then followed, a little later, by a Victorian Silver Gilt Freedom Casket, presented to a former mayor of Longton, Staffordshire. It was bought for £2,500, by a new private bidder, who bought several other items in the sale.

The surprise lot of the day, came in the form of five boxes of Meccano Dinky Toy die-cast vehicles. They were unboxed, and badly scratched, but reached a staggering £2,800, because there were some rare pre-war models included in the lot.

The auction ended with two pieces of Antique Furniture, which both went beyond expectations. The first was a Late Regency Dwarf Bookcase, which made £660, and a William IV Rosewood Writing Table, which despite needing some restoration, still sold privately for £1,000.

Our next Auction Sale is due to be held on Wednesday 22nd July, 2020, and will also be an online only event. Further information can be obtained from us by telephoning our office on (01732) 456731, or through our website www.ibbettmosely.co.uk

Our first Auction Sale of 2020, held on 22nd January, included a beautiful diamond pendant/brooch. In the distinctive Art Deco Style, set with three yellow diamonds, and fifty four different sized white diamonds, totalling 4.01 carats, overall, it was of the sort of quality that has been attributed to Paris jewellery houses such as Frederic Boucheron. Brought into one of Ibbett Mosely’s regular valuation days, at their Sevenoaks Auction Rooms, the lady client said that she wanted to pass the proceeds on to help her grand children. On sale day, estimated by the Auctioneers, at £2,500 – £3,500, it was contested by both trade and private buyers, eventually selling to a local lady who had been on their catalogue mailing list, for some years, and was her first purchase, at £4,100. Partner, and Head Auctioneer, Alan White, said “What a great start to the year this was, and it proves that small provincial salerooms can achieve similar prices to much bigger firms”.
